Youth Peace and Security Coordination Meets the UN Special Envoy’s Office to Yemen
The Yemeni Youth, Peace and Security Coordination (YPS), in cooperation with Raneen Yemen Organization, held a coordination meeting via Zoom with the Security Sector Reform Team at the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY). The meeting was held within the framework of the project “Enhancing the Role of Youth in Improving Civilian Protection Mechanisms and Practices at Checkpoints”, implemented in partnership with Raneen Yemen Foundation, Saferworld, and SOS Foundation, with support from the European Union.
The meeting discussed the project’s outcomes, including the training of youth protection committees in the targeted governorates, documentation of wrongful practices related to civilian protection, and the implementation of awareness sessions and community dialogues with security authorities. It also reviewed the field challenges faced by civilians at security checkpoints and how these challenges vary from one governorate to another.
Representatives of the UN Special Envoy’s Office commended the efforts made and the evidence-based, community-driven approach that actively engages youth, and expressed interest in supporting the continuity of such initiatives through coordination with various partners.
The Coordination also presented its vision for the next phase, which focuses on working in parallel with security leadership, security personnel at checkpoints, and local communities, with the aim of enhancing civilian protection, building trust, and supporting security sector reform pathways.
